On November 23rd, 2019, The Center for Global Competence Development (CGCD) of Tsinghua University and SCOLAR Network organized an interactive game “Model SCO” at Tsinghua University campus in Beijing. 18 students of Tsinghua University, both from SCO and non-SCO countries (including Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, Zimbabwe and other countries) in the roles of delegations of 8 SCO member states, SCO Secretariat and SCO RATS, simulated a session of the Council of National Coordinators of SCO Member States. The topic of the event was “Higher Education Diplomacy”.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has developed itself as a universally recognized cross-regional Organization, whose activities are aimed at maintaining regional security and stability, jointly confronting new challenges and threats, strengthening trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, and unlocking the huge potential of good neighborliness, friendship, and cooperation between the SCO member states and their peoples. At the SCO Summit in Bishkek on June 13, 2019, the Heads of SCO member states signed the Bishkek Declaration, which highlighted the growth of youth mobility and development of the education sphere. Particularly, the importance of cooperation between the education facilities of SCO member states was mentioned.
In this regard, the “Model SCO” participants led discussions on the development of cooperation between higher education facilities of SCO and youth participation in regional cooperation and strengthening mutual understanding between peoples. Delegates expressed their readiness for close, fruitful and versatile cooperation based on the principles of the “Shanghai Spirit” – mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultations, respect for the diversity of cultures, and the desire for joint development.
Delegates exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including the role of young people in the development of higher education diplomacy in the region, the search for new education opportunities, as well as the problems and challenges, which young people are facing. Delegates noted that despite the successes in the development and support of cooperation between Universities within the SCO region, certain problems still exist. The participants of the conference proposed several suggestions, including the foundation of SCO University Alumni Network and SCO Scholarship Fund, which could help overcome current challenges.
