Library Project in Nepal

On 8 April 2022, SCOLAR Kathmandu hub, with support from SCOLAR Network and in collaboration with Rotaract Club of Patan South, Rotary Club of Patan South, and Interact Club St. Xavier’s Jawalakhel, established a local library at Jaleshwor, Mahotarri, Province 2. Forging ahead, the Central Bureau of Statistics, Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey recommends a concentrated effort to strengthen educational systems in province-2, which has the lowest attendance rates across all school levels. Mahottari district, part of province 2, is ranked 3rd last in terms of primary education, with a literacy rate of only 46.4%. With the rise of awareness among locals in due time, they have also realized a need for a library to access education.
Acknowledging this gap, the SCOLAR Kathmandu hub, collaborating with local youth communities, started researching the region. With the provincial government’s support, they could secure a place to establish a library at Village Youth Club. With more than six months of planning, they could gather books, furniture, and other essentials for the library. Also, a monetary donation was provided from youth communities and the SCOLAR Network for the maintenance of the library.

The following items were handed over to Village Youth Club.
1. Cupboard: 11
2. Steel book rack: 11
3. Steel table: 11
4. Plastic chairs: 10
5. Books: 600

A team from Kathmandu Hub has set the first phase of library installation at “Village Youth Club”, which will be open to all learners. People will have free access to this library’s newspapers, books, and other materials. With the promise to look and care for this library, SCOLAR Kathmandu will be handing this library to the leader of the Village Youth Club, safeguarding its future and maintenance. The local authorities have guaranteed to look after the library and its maintenance. The project site is within walking distance from the ward office and municipality.

With the support and invigilation from the ward chief, this project will most benefit over 100’s nearby households, ranging from children to old age groups.

We have established the library in this remote region of Nepal, but it will require constant maintenance and an inflow of books. Therefore, we request that all readers contact SCOLAR Kathmandu Hub if they want to support the library by donating books or capital.
